Ezra Jack Keats Written by two of his close friends, this is an introduction to the life ezra lusk and work of beloved author/illustrator Ezra Jack Keats. Born Jack Ezra Katz, Keats began his life as an artist at the tender age of four. Although his desire to create art was seen as frivolous by his father, his mother encouraged him to paint, draw, ezra lusk and sketch, ezra lusk and during the Great Depression he actually managed to help support his family by trading his works for food ezra lusk and other necessities. Keats began his career in publishing by illustrating books by other authors, but the first book he both wrote ezra lusk and illustrated, THE SNOWY DAY, won the 1963 Caldecott Medal. That book was unusual for its time, in that it featured an African American protagonist, a trend Keats continued in such other books as GOGGLES! And WHISTLE FOR WILLIE.
